Of Super Bowls and Stripper Poles

Oh…my…GAWD…the Super Bowl halftime show was DISGUSTING. A display of crotches, crotch grabbing, stripper poles and certainly not fit for CHILDREN.

OH THE HUMANITY!!!

It was disgraceful.

Not family oriented.

IT WAS…PORNOGRAPHIC!!!

Seriously…enough. I mean really, that’s quite enough.

To be honest, the outcry, and outrage being posted about social media has been ridiculous, and from the people posting the collective meltdown…

It’s been quite hypocritical as well.

Let’s face it, those who claim moral outrage over this year’s Super Bowl halftime show are some of the exact same people who’ve been using a certain term for what’s been happening to President Trump since the day he was inaugurated.

They’ve called it a “witch hunt,” and rightly so, but that particular term…”witch hunt” is derived from the old Salem witch trials of Puritan New England in the 1600’s. Many of the same people who have for years now decried a return to Puritanism’s sense of morality, the “witch hunts” are now trying to instill a Puritan styled morality into a football halftime show.

Let me be completely honest here…sex sells. It always has. In fact, since the invention of marketing, sexuality has been used to hold people’s attention. This ploy can be traced all the way back to the invention of crude tools as made by our ancient ancestors, the Australopitheci. Back then, someone crafted a sharp piece of stone with which to cut the sinew of whatever some burly Australopithecus man had killed for dinner, and yet, other males of the species continued to simply gnaw at said sinew…until…the marketing department chose the least hairy Australopithecus female available to show the gnawing men a better way.

Down the road, reportedly, it was Eve who marketed the apple to Adam which in turn led to all of humanity…at least according to the holier-than-thous who have been feigning outrage over this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.

I submit that without sexuality, we wouldn’t be cutting strings with sharpened objects today because without sexuality, none of us would BE here today.

And what exactly is the Super Bowl halftime show for anyway? It’s roughly 15 minutes of dead space where the NFL needs something to hold the attention of their primary audience…men. Programmers, who have charged tens of millions of dollars for advertising during the game, have sold the halftime show rights to Pepsi for tens of millions of dollars, and thus, something that keeps people tuned in is called for. Since the primary audience is men, the attention holding element is naturally…women.

It’s not always women performing the halftime show, but advertising execs have noticed that when the featured performers are men, the audience drops, so…this years featured performers were Shakira, and Jennifer Lopez, and let’s face it, the promotion of the halftime show wasn’t kept a secret.

So…what exactly did some people expect?

Apparently, not Shakira, or Jennifer Lopez to do at the halftime show what they normally do in their respective concerts.

I saw one social media post that asked “what ever happened to having a marching band for the halftime show?” Well, to be perfectly honest, it would be nearly impossible to play a tuba whilst spinning on a pole. To be perfectly blunt, the Super Bowl isn’t a high school football game, or for that matter, your average college game. It is a billion dollar advertising juggernaut and entertainment event that also encompasses a football game played by multi-millionaires, and which appeals primarily to a male audience.

It’s the SUPER BOWL…not Sesame Street, and nobody wants the halftime show to feature Muppets, singing purple dinosaurs, or the Mickey Mouse Club.

I also saw numerous social media posts whining that the halftime show wasn’t kid friendly. Let me ask those whiners a simple question…did you hire a silly clown to make balloon animals for your Super Bowl party guests last Sunday? No? Why not? Because it wasn’t a kiddie party was it.

One social media poster said that her 3 year old asked her what a stripper pole was, and asked how she was supposed to respond to that. Well…I dare say that her 3 year old had probably never heard the term “stripper pole” before Sunday’s halftime show, and probably would still not have heard it unless MOMMY shouted during the halftime show…”OH MY GAWD SHE’S ON A STRIPPER POLE.”

Pole dancing, by the way, is no longer confined to strip clubs, and is being considered for a future Olympic sport.

GOD FORBID that these Puritan social media morality police parents allow their Puritan children to watch something as morally bankrupt as the Olympics. Have you seen the outfits worn by female Olympic athletes? The figure skaters, the track athletes or the gymnasts?

And let’s remember our Olympics history. The original games in ancient Greece featured only male athletes who competed COMPLETELY NUDE. Thankfully, that ended when people started complaining, not about the nudity but about the East German women’s swim team steering with rudders, and the East German women’s swim team complained that they were subjected to an undue amount of drag from their periscopes being up during the back stroke.

Did Jennifer Lopez do some pole dancing during the halftime show? She did, but it wasn’t a striptease as some holier-than-thou Puritan sorts have claimed. In fact, she was far more covered up than any woman, or girl Puritan people might see at the beach or neighborhood pool.

Did Shakira shake her ass, and her assets during the halftime show? Yep…it was, for the most part, belly-dancing which is part of her Lebanese heritage…and she’s pretty damned good at it.

The outfits both women wore are the exact sorts of outfits they wear on stage during any given performance, their moves were the moves they perform at any given concert, and the music, while not my cup of whatever…was exactly what one should expect from those two artists. In other words…what was performed at the Super Bowl halftime show was a mini, condensed live stage concert by two recording artists.

I’ll be honest…I didn’t watch the game, or the halftime show during the game, but after seeing so many Puritans complaining about the show, I went to You Tube. I watched it with the volume cranked up, and failed to be offended by the outfits, or the dancing. I was  somewhat disappointed in the not so subtle political aspects of it, and as I said, the music wasn’t my thing…so…the next couple of dozen times I watched it on You Tube…trying like hell to see what the Puritan fuss was all about…I kept the volume muted.

I still don’t get the uproar, but I am willing to subject myself to it at least a dozen more times on the off chance I might eventually become offended.

And finally, there’s this…most of those I have seen pitching a social media fit over the Super Bowl halftime show, are the same people who get upset when social media applies their liberal standards to silence Conservatives. If you don’t like it when your posts get censored by liberals, don’t insist that the halftime show be censored by your own Puritanesque standards.

By the way, if you have a remote control, neither you, nor your Puritan children had to watch the halftime show, and a word of warning for next year…regardless of who might be the featured performer..don’t hold your collective breath for a stirring rendition of Nearer My God to Thee being performed by some Tabernacle choir of tabernacless boys.

Ain’t gonna happen.

  1. I thought the half-time show was super. Those two women are so talented, and their concerts are always sold out everywhere. Thanks, Craig!

  2. WTG Craig and Diane! Well said! To the prudish and the younger set, well, this wasn’t about You. Good show!, and Good read! Keep up the good work! Love ya!

    • Thanks for the shout out Suzanne but this particular article is Craig’s alone although we discussed the halftime show and reviewed the video together. We will be discussing this on Friday’s show. BTW, I do agree with all Craig said.

  3. Hey don’t give me a sermon on not being tolerant enough about the declining morals of this country. Its reflected in social media and used to desensitize children and adults. I used to be a lesbian and was saved by the Lord, so don’t label Christians sarcastically as Puritans. I no longer act out that deathstyle. My husband said the half time show was demonic and I agree. Don’t try to speak for all males or females. Ask yourself if God who created our sexuality would approve.

    • I am honest enough not to pretend to know what God thinks about anything, nor pretentious enough to claim that I do. And for the record, I used to be much more the way you are now, until people like you, and their holier-than-thou attitudes drove me from it to a much more realistic view of the world around me. As a Christian, I believe God provided us all with the ability to think for ourselves, and using that ability, I have no real use for blind faith. Religion, all religion is a man-made set of rules and has become a crutch for those who would rather not apply actual thought to our daily lives. I still believe in God, but I don’t feel the need to throw common sense away in the process. Thanks for the “stinging rebuke” and enjoy your holier-than-thou perch. This article isn’t for everyone…the truth rarely is. Finally, if you saw this article as a “sermon” you completely missed the point.

    • Adrienne…as Craig’s radio partner, and friend, I think that instead of getting all hissy about a halftime show you should direct that anger at the practitioners of the sharia and NOT at women basically doing the job they were paid to do…as in entertain the crowd at the premier sports event of the year. There was NOTHING demonic in their performance for I saw NO little demons running around nor any pointy-tailed horned devil sorts either as both are the inventions of man. FYI…just so you don’t get all bent out of shape I am a believer in God the Father, I just don’t buy into all the dogma and tenets of what is man-made religion. BTW…I agree with all Craig said after all this is the 21st century and NOT the 1st century A.D.
