8:46am.

9:03am.

9:37am.

9:59am.

10:03am.

10:28am.

On 9/11 2001, the day was a blur for anyone who was old enough to be paying attention to the breaking news. It also remains crystal clear to those who are still paying attention. It all happened so fast, and yet it seemed like slow motion.

At 8:46am, American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into floors 93 through 99 of the North Tower (1 WTC).

At 9:03am, as people stared at the gaping hole in 1WTC, trying to figure out how such a thing could happen, but before people began to ponder the loss of life, United Airlines Flight 175 smashed into floors 77 through 85 of the South Tower (2 WTC).

Suddenly, people realized that neither crash was an accident. Everybody knew what it was, and anyone with an ounce of common sense knew in general who was responsible.

At 9:37am, only 51 minutes after the first impact, and 34 minutes after the second, American Airlines Flight 77 ripped into the Pentagon, near Washington, D.C.

22 minutes later, at 9:59am, the South Tower (2 WTC) collapses in a sickening column of smoke and debris.

At 10:03am, a scant 4 minutes after the collapse of 2 WTC, those passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 launched an offensive against the hijackers on their plane in an effort to regain control of the aircraft, and the plane went down empty field near Shanksville, Pa.

Then, at 10:28am, The North Tower (1 WTC) collapses.

In just one hour and forty two minutes…we went from a Tuesday morning…to 9/11.

Obviously, that wasn’t the end of the day, and it was far from the end of the tragic event. There was the President in Florida, in a school room, reading to kids…his Chief of Staff whispering in his ear…the look on the President’s face and his hasty news conference.

There was Louisiana…and then Omaha…and while all flights…all flights were being grounded wherever they could land, the President flew back to D.C..

Panic in the streets of New York City, people trying to find a way out, first responders trying to find a way in, people helping people they had never met, and knew nothing about, sirens, police, firefighters, volunteers, business people, street people, students, churches, organizations and then some all with a singular goal…

Rescue everybody they could. Start digging with their bare hands, find people in that massive pile of rubble, and rescue everybody…as many as you could…anybody…just find one…please let there be one.

It didn’t matter where you were that day, if you went outside three things became eerily obvious…the streets were nearly empty…it was freakishly quiet…and you looked…up. No airplanes. You went back inside and sat down in front of the TV, remote in hand, and started surfing the news channels again.

Ground Zero.

That used to be nothing more than a simple turn of a phrase that was used most often to describe a thought process or something to mark an obscure historical point in time. By mid-afternoon on that particular Tuesday, Ground Zero had a geographic location…an address in Lower Manhattan.

Ground Zero, the Pentagon, Shanksville, the Whitehouse…back to the Pentagon…Ground Zero, Shanksville again…and back to a shot of the White House. It didn’t matter which network you were watching, that was the rotation, and between live shots of the frantic efforts on the ground…the taped replays of the impacts from different angles, replays of the smoke, the people running…and the collapse of both towers.

Maybe you knew somebody who should have been in one of those towers that day, maybe you knew someone who was working at the Pentagon, or maybe you knew somebody who was just flying somewhere that day, and you wondered where they were…if they were okay…and how they would get home.

Maybe you didn’t know anyone in any of those positions…but you cursed the unknown names of the goddamned bastards who did it anyway.

We would learn a lot in the days and weeks to come…the names of the hijackers, the name of their leader, and their organization. We would learn the staggering death toll, and about the families they left behind. We would hear the voices of those on that plane that went down in Shanksville…calling their loved ones…telling them what they were about to do.

Let’s roll.

We would all learn that there were virtually no survivors at Ground Zero, save a small handful who were somehow found alive in the rubble, and we would hear the stories of the first responders who were there and lived, and watch the funerals of those who were there…and didn’t.

We would, in the years to come, hear the conspiracy theories, manufactured by those who would rather believe in what they cannot prove, rather in what they actually saw, and perpetrated by those who refuse to accept reality and have no relationship with the truth.

They’re full of crap. Most of them know it, but sadly some of them don’t.

It took almost two weeks before the grounding order was lifted, and planes again took to the sky. By then, the freakish quiet was gone, people were out and about again…but…when we heard the first plane after that terrible day…we all looked up…and we watched that plane until it was so far away we couldn’t see it any more.

We all have our individual memories of 9/11. We know where we were…who we were with…what we said and how we felt, but we also share collective memories of that day…of that 1 hour and 42 minutes…and of what came after that.

There’s one more number that is important too…

18.

That’s how many years it has been.

Never Forget.
