Weekend Edition: The Problem IS Spending

When we look at the numbers being bandied about in Washington these days, we know they’re BIG but, it’s just impossible to fully wrap our heads around them.

The national debt is $16.5 TRILLION DOLLARS.

Our annual deficit for the last 4 years has averaged somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.2 or $1.3 TRILLION DOLLARS.

It’s staggering, isn’t it?

Billions…Hundreds of billions…TRILLIONS…

How does one even begin to understand such figures?

This is why so many simply toss up their hands and walk away from conversations regarding these unfathomable numbers.

Allow me to add some context.

Something by which we can come to terms with the sorts of dollars we’re talking about when we discuss our bleak economic situation.

I’ll start with a simple question regarding a number we CAN understand.

Here goes…

When was the last time that YOU, as an individual, borrowed $50,000.00 dollars?

Some MAY have borrow such a sum for a new high-end car.

Others, can relate that figure to their home loan.

Some have NEVER borrowed such an amount of money but, they CAN grasp the concept OF it.

Okay…That’s our starting point then.

50 grand.

Now…Hold onto your seats…

The United States government borrows…

Fifty…

Thousand…

Dollars…

Every…

Second…

Of the day…

24 hours a day…

7 days a week…

365 days a year.

THAT…Is staggering.

50k every second. $3 million every MINUTE. $180 million every HOUR.

$4 BILLION three hundred twenty thousand dollars EVERY DAY.

$1.5 TRILLION DOLLARS EVERY YEAR!!!!!

Staggering? Yes however, even MORE staggering is the fact that we SPEND MORE THAN THAT!!!!

The federal government, this year, will take a total of $2.9 TRILLION dollars of OUR money and they will SPEND more than $4 TRILLION DOLLARS.

Hence…Our 1.1 or 1.2 TRILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT and the reason we have to BORROW $50 THOUSAND DOLLARS EVER SECOND OF EVERY DAY.

To be fair, this is nothing new. Our federal government has been spending more than they take from us for decades, regardless of the party of the administration.

Did Bush spend too much?

Damn skippy he did and Obama called the 8 years of Bush era spending…”Unpatriotic!”

Obama spent more in his first term than Bush did in two terms.

Now…given the numbers outlined above, consider what has recently been said by Washington’s left side of the aisle.

Obama to Boehner: “We don’t have a spending problem.”

Nancy Pelosi: “We have to make a judgment about what — how do we get growth with jobs, that is where the real revenue comes from. You don’t get it by…cutting your education and cutting back on investments in science and National Institutes of Health, food safety, you name it. So, it isn’t as much a spending problem as it is a priorities — and that is what the budget is, setting priorities…So it is almost a false argument to say we have a spending problem, we have a budget deficit problem.”

Congressman Stenny Hoyer in an NBC interview: ANCHOR: Sir, does the country have a spending problem?

HOYER: Does the country have a spending problem?  The country has a paying-for problem.  We haven’t paid for what we bought.  We haven’t paid for the tax cuts, we haven’t paid for the wars…

ANCHOR: Are we promising too much?

HOYER:  Absolutely.  If we don’t pay, we shouldn’t buy.

ANCHOR: So how is this different from a spending problem?

HOYER: Well, we spent a lot of money when George Bush was President of the United States…

These are very telling of the culture of socialism now existing in the current administration. No…Of course we don’t have a spending problem. Just because we spend more than we’re able to rob from the people and have to borrow more and more to cover the bill…well…THAT’S not a spending problem…THAT, they wish us to believe, is a REVENUE problem and the reason why we need to keep raising taxes.

As impossible as it is to believe that Obama, Pelosi and Hoyer actually believe what is coming from their mouths, it’s NOTHING compared to the utterance of Iowa’s Senator Harkin.

Now, before you read the quote…a little context.

We run up a deficit, every year of 1.2 TRILLION DOLLARS and…We are now…$16.5 TRILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT.

Okay…Here’s  Senator Tom Harkin: I want to disagree with those who say we have a spending problem. Everyone keeps saying we have a spending problem. And when they talk about that, it’s like there’s an assumption that somehow we as a nation are broke. We can’t afford these things any longer. We’re too broke to invest in education and housing and things like that. Well look at it this way, we’re the richest nation in the history of the world. We are now the richest nation in the world. We have the highest per capita income of any major nation. That kind of begs the question, doesn’t it? If we’re so rich, why are we so broke? Is it a spending problem? No.”

Now I don’t know about you but…When my bank account reaches zero…I’m Broke…

BUT…

According to Tom Harkin…WHEN OUR NATION’S BANK ACCOUNT IS AT…NEGATIVE…$16.5 TRILLION DOLLARS…

We’re not broke?????

We DON’T have a SPENDING problem???

Really???????

They, the leftist socialist ilk in general, are insulting our intelligence. They’re telling us that up is down. They’re telling us that water isn’t wet.

“These are not the droids you’re looking for…”

THEY want YOU to believe it’s a REVENUE problem.

Have you ever asked your boss for a raise? Most of us have at some point and either we get one or we don’t but, for the sake of argument, let’s say you DID get that raise.

Did you ever go back 2 weeks later and tell your boss you needed ANOTHER raise???

Essentially that is exactly what the Dictator is doing now.

He just secured a tax hike and NOT just on the rich as he had promised. THAT tax hike came just 2 years AFTER the BIGGEST tax hike in American history…Obamacare…With ITS 21 BRAND NEW TAXES!!!

Now, facing sequestration, OBAMA”S OWN STUPID IDEA…he’s telling us that planes will fall from the sky, teachers, paid for by state and local taxes, won’t be able to indoctrinate your kids, cops and fire departments, also paid for by local and state taxes won’t be there when the bad guys show up our your house catches fire…IF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOESN’T TAKE MORE OR YOUR MONEY.

He, Obama, on behalf of the federal government, wants yet ANOTHER raise and if he doesn’t get it, he wants you to understand that the world will end.

Our government is taking from us…$2.9 TRILLION dollars every year. THAT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH.

Our government is SPENDING…$4.1 TRILLION dollars every year. THAT IS FAR TOO MUCH.

Now…Remember where we started?

Remember that $50 thousand bucks we borrow every second of every day?

Let’s put THAT number in context shall we?

When Obama took office, your share, my share, every man woman and child’s share of the national debt was $36,000.00.

Since then, we’ve had THE biggest tax hike in American history…Obamacare AND the recent tax hike which not only hit the RICH but…EVERY taxpayer in the country but…TODAY…

Every man woman and child in America, instead of owning $36 thousand dollars of the national debt…NOW owns $53,000.00 of the national debt.

We Have a spending problem.

  1. Wow. Does anyone realize that when the lenders of all this money call in the loans, the United States of America will be on the auction block and sold off to the creditors? Considering that China is touted as the main lender that just scares the bejeebers out of me.

  2. Joan, I used to rely on McDonalds to let me know the numerical progression but they have let me down.

  3. For future reference, please tell me what comes after “trillion?” That was a word bandied about when I was growing up that nobody understood. Even “billion” was beyond comprehension, and “million” was used with extreme caution. I’m a bit curious about where this $50,000/second “loan” comes from. Who has that kind of money that they can afford to give it away?
