Ron Paul is Dead Wrong on Israel and Iran

Last Thursday, I wrote a piece titled, I Do, and We as a Nation Should, Stand With Israel which laid out the situation between Israel and Iran in what I felt was pretty clear language. At the end of that piece, I spelled it out this way:

“With Egypt now in the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood, a Hamas affiliate, Iran in the hands of a madman, Syria growing bolder by the day and Libya in the hands of who knows who but certainly with al Qaeda taking root, Iraq up for grabs as soon as we pull out in the next 6 weeks, Pakistan harboring terrorist activity and Afghanistan soon to become a vacuum, time is of the essence and clearly NOT on the side of Israel.”

After posting the piece, I received a good number of emails from Ron Paul followers asking all sorts of obtuse and dismissive questions including, “What do you think we need to do, babysit Israel forever?” and, “Are you really saying that Israel should attack Iran because of what they only THINK might happen?” and, “We should stay out of Israel’s affairs and Israel should stay out of Iran’s. Why do people like you always want war instead of peace?”

I am going to make this as clear as I know how.

Ron Paul and his army of Paulbots are dead wrong.

First, no we need not babysit Israel and anybody who thinks that is what we have done in the past or in any way what I am advocating is a fool. Israel doesn’t need us as a babysitter in any way shape or form. Being an ally is far removed from being a babysitter. We are an ally of Israel and they of us. Got it?

When an alley such as Israel is threatened, we stand with them not for them as we know Israel is perfectly capable of defending themselves but, when push comes to shove, we stand WITH them. We should not, in Israel’s case, fight their fights for them but WITH them…Israel is not Kuwait without the capability of self defense, Israel’s got game but that doesn’t mean they should fight alone.

Next, we are not meddling in Israel’s affairs if we stand with them. If Israel decides to launch a preemptive strike against Iran and I believe they should, by assisting them we would not in any manner be meddling in their affairs. Israel would not, in launching such an attack be meddling in the affairs of Iran either. It’s a matter of self preservation for Israel.

People like me do not want war instead of peace either but people like me do understand that sometimes, a show of force is necessary and we do not advocate it as a first option. Iran has been given warning after warning, sanction after sanction and yet they continue to march toward building a nuclear weapon. Diplomacy is not working. Diplomacy with a regime like that simply will not work and Iran is, every day, making that clear. Diplomacy first, force later.  Diplomacy has failed and now it’s time for stronger measures.

Finally…It’s not about what Israel or anybody else only THINKS might happen…It is what Israel and others KNOW…WILL…happen.

When the U.S. and the Soviet Union were engaged in the cold war, we both built nukes based on the premise that neither would want to use them knowing the other could launch and mutual destruction would be assured. India and Pakistan…same thing…I know it’s hard for some to grasp but countries like that ensure that neither will use them if both have them.

Israel has nukes and to some, especially Paulbots, that means Iran should be allowed to have them too.

WRONG!!!

Israel has them as a last line of the own defense.

DEFENSE…GOT IT???

If Iran is allowed to build a nuclear weapon we know they WILL use it OFFENSIVELY.

Put guns into the hands of Mexican drug cartels and THEY WILL USE THEM.

Hand an AK-47 to a gang-banger…that gang-banger WILL USE IT.

Give a nuke to Iran…guess what…THEY WILL USE IT.

Here is the difference Paulbots…Israel has never advocated wiping any nation off the map. NEVER. Iran HAS advocated wiping IRSAEL off the map.

When Israel decides to launch, and I believe it is much more a matter of when then if, the U.S. SHOULD employ teamwork and work in concert WITH Israel to make it happen. Both we and Israel using satellite technology to identify and pinpoint targets, the U.S. using stealth technology to take out radar and anti aircraft sites in Iran with the Israelis flying the strikes to take out Iran’s enrichment facilities.

Teamwork. Working with our ally. Side by side.

There is no question regarding Iran’s intentions here. They have uranium enrichment facilities. They have admitted it and the U.N. will, within days, release a report verifying it.

The only reason to enrich uranium is to build nuclear weapons.

Iran has not nor will they bow to diplomatic pressure and they continue to defy all attempts to use diplomacy.

Iran wants Israel gone.

For those who claim Iran can’t reach Israel with their current missile systems, are you 100% sure of that? Are you aware that Syria CAN and that Syria has threatened to move weapons into Gaza to strike Israel? They Have. The thing about nuclear weapons is that they are not surgical strike weapons…you just have to get them into the general vicinity.

Paulbots would sit by and watch while Israel is destroyed because they are more than willing to sit by and watch while Iran constructs the weapons they intend to use. Is our current administration any different? Time will tell but so far, this administration has been content with allowing Iran do do as they choose and did not lift a finger when a popular uprising in Iran, aimed at the overthrow of that regime was crushed.

Let me be as clear and concise as possible here. Israel has every right to launch a preemptive strike against Iran’s nuclear armament facilities and I believe they should do exactly that. I also believe Prime Minister Netanyahu will soon have the support within his own government to put such a plan in motion and once that support is in place, I believe he will.

The United States, the Obama administration should be there side by side with Israel in the planning and execution of such a measure and the United States should be ready and willing to stand with Israel against any forthcoming condemnation for it.

This is not a matter of what is or is not politically correct. It IS a matter of what is necessary, considering the failed diplomatic efforts, for the very survival of Israel.

  1. America plays both sides. Israel needs to be totally independent. Clinton pushed the Oslo Agreement which was a total failure and Bush said nothing. Israel’s own government is really to blame not Ron Paul or his supporters. I am well aware that the muslims want to wipe Israel off the map, so take back your lands and be one nation under Ha shem.

  2. Let Israel fight its own battles. Israel has nukes, an army (subsidized by the United States), that can deal with Iran.

Why should Americans pay the freight in money, welfare/subsidies, and war on Israel’s behalf because Israel can’t achieve peace?

I think most Americans are not buying this neo-con view of foreign policy anymore in which war is the only answer, and america is the one to pay the price in blood & money. We are sorta tired of being used.

Also, lets be real – most of the pro-war, pro-israel mindset always wraps into their argument “…our friend Israel…”. Well, what does Israel give us? Friendship is a two-way street and I don’t see any reciprocation from Israel. If you mean endless wars, monies, headaches – then yes, but that isn’t a friendship.

Maybe if Israel spent more time trying to achieve real peace and friendship with its neighbors, there wouldn’t be so much war. And don’t see “Israel tries..” it doesn’t.

  3. Great piece, Craig. Absolutely true in all regards and I agree. The demeanor of Iran should alarm anyone. We, as Americans, and as Israels ally as you made very clear, must stand with and defend Israel…I believe the future of Israel depends on it to some degree. As Paulbots say, yes, God WILL take care of Israel. The only part they are missing, though, is that the USA will continue to stand by Israel as well. Anyway, great article, I’ll have to share it around!
